Barons Defeat Blues in Game 1

The Academy Barons defeated the San Luis Obispo Blues in an epic pitchers duel that ended with a final score of 1-0.

JJ Stephens received the start and was absolutely superb. Stephens pitched 6.0 innings allowing six hits struck out four batters. He received a no decision in the start. Wesley Albert was the first of three pitchers called from the bullpen. Albert pitched just one inning and did not allow a single hit while fanning two batters. Tyler Tungate was the set up man in the 8th inning once the Barons took a 1-0 lead. Tungate received the win in his outing. Joseph Mercado was called on for the save and pitched the final frame. Mercado struck out one batter in his save.

The Barons’ bats were kept in check in the duel but it was the one run that was the difference. Jonah Hargroves was the leading hitter on the team going 2-3 and was the winning run. Bruce Martin drove in Hargroves with a sacrifice fly in the 8th inning.

The Barons will play the Blues again tomorrow at 6 p.m.
