Barons See Oaks in First Postseason Contest

Updated: July 28, 2016

The Academy Barons (24-11) are set to begin their playoff run on Friday as the top seed in the California Collegiate League (CCL) and winner of the league’s south division. The playoffs consist of the top four teams in the league – each divisional winner and a wildcard. The MLB Urban Youth Academy, home of the Barons, will serve as host for this year’s CCL playoffs over the weekend.

Barons players were given the day off on Thursday, however several Barons staffers spent time at the Academy getting items in gear for Friday’s contest against the Conejo Oaks (21-15) of the central division who enter the playoffs after clinching the league’s sole wildcard spot on Wednesday.

The Barons Head Coach Kenny Landreaux commented on his team’s playoff start saying, “It has been a fun and successful summer, but our work isn’t done. We’ve worked hard to put ourselves in the position we’re in and have to continue to compete.” Speaking specifically of Friday’s game against the Oaks, Landreaux said, “They are a very good team and so we will need to play flawless baseball. We cannot afford to give anything away.”

The Barons are 3-1 against the Oaks this season, and 2-0 against them at the Academy.

The other two teams in the playoffs are the Neptune Beach Pearl (17-9), winners of the north division, and the Santa Barbara Foresters (21-12), winners of the central division. The Pearl and Foresters begin postseason play with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Friday. The Barons and Oaks take the field for a 6 p.m. start.
