Barons Take Season Opener

The Barons defeated the Signal Hill Oilers 9-4 in their season opener Wednesday night at the MLB Urban Youth Academy.

Barons right-handed pitcher Gary Smith earned the win after not allowing a run and collecting two strikeouts over three innings on the bump. Closer Reece Buska picked up three strikeouts in his two innings of work. Barons pitching collected a total of nine strikeouts on the night.

The Barons bats were alive as they collected nine runs on 15 hits. Centerfielder Ernie De La Trinidad led the Barons going 4×5 with a double. Right fielder Cody Den Beste went 3×5, while third baseman Martin Teague also went 3×5 with 3 RBIs. DH Albert Perez went 2×5 and knocked in two runs.

The Barons return to the field Thursday when they play the first of a two-game set against the Garden Grove 22’s. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the Academy.
